Zero Carbon Buildings Seminar

By

Paul Cooper, Hoare Lea & Nicola Carniato, AKT II

At

Webb Library, Jesus College, Cambridge, CB5 8BJ

on

10th January 2020, 12.30pm - 2.30pm

Programme:

The UK Government has made legally binding commitments to achieving Nett Zero Carbon by 2040. This combined with the rapid decarbonisation of the UK electrical grid and imminent changes to Part L will mean a step change in the way in which buildings are designed and the approach to energy usage sustainable design.

Pauls presentation will discuss the government and industry response to the climate emergency, the impact of grid decarbonisation on system selection and methods of achieving substantial reductions in emissions through active and passive measures. Paul will also reflect on his findings from a recent “Building in Use” survey undertaken for the DfE on a number of “sustainable” and “low carbon” schools built in the last 8-10 years.

Nicola’s presentation covers the impact of the embodied emissions arising from producing procuring and installing the materials and components that make up a structural frame.

Speakers:

Paul is a Building Services Engineer with almost 20 years’ experience. He specialises in the delivery of Education projects and in particular Schools and Academies. He has delivered over 50 school projects and worked with the Department of Education on the recent changes to BB101 and the Output Specification. He has recently completed Building in Use Surveys on a number of sustainable school buildings to understand their long term performance.

As Technical Director, Nicola is responsible for the technical control of projects and also for leading the technical agenda within the practice. In particular his focus is on the modern methods of construction, sustainability and composite materials. Part of his role is promoting research projects which can provide useful information for the construction industry.

Registration from 12.30pm, with talk commencing at 1pm.  Lunch will be provided.

This event is free for CE members plus a guest.
